Künker's Berlin sale brings $7.8 million

The first auction offered 709 lots of gold coins and silver crowns and minors from medieval to modern times. The second auction featured 438 lots of Russian numismatic material and one lot of philatelic history.

Fifteen lots were unsold.

Russian coins, including a 1730 silver ruble of Anna struck at the Kadashevsky Mint in Moscow, brought particularly strong results, according to the firm.

The coin sold for 471,500, or about $662,915 in U.S. funds.

  • Baltic states, Livonia (Livland), circa 1559 to 1561 gold 2½-ducat coin, Gotthard Kettler, Riga Mint, Very Fine to Extremely Fine, 43,700 ($61,441 in U.S. funds).
  • Prussia, 1851 gold 50-ducat medal, Friedrich Wilhelm IV, designed by F.W. Kullrich, on the accomplishment of the memorial of Friedrich the Great at the boulevard "Unter den Linden" in Berlin, "extremely rare in gold," About Uncirculated, 46,000 ($64,675).
  • Russia, 1701 silver half ruble (poltina), Peter I, Kadashevsky Mint, Moscow, VF, 155,250 ($218,277).
  • Russia, 1714 silver medal, Peter I, Courage medal for soldiers in Battle of Hanko, EF, 43,700 ($61,441).
  • Russia, 1726 silver pattern quarter ruble, Catherine I, St. Petersburg Mint, EF-Uncirculated, 97,750 ($137,434).

Pre-Long Beach sale realizes $5.4 million

Exonumia, U.S. coins and U.S. paper money offered during the Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 auction in Beverly Hills, Calif., by Ira & Larry Goldberg Auctioneers, realized approximately $5,485,888.

The total quoted, which includes a 15 percent buyer's fee added to the hammer price of each coin, is based on preliminary prices realized posted at the firm's Web site.

1907 double eagle tops bidding in sale

The Scotsman Auction Co., Saint Louis, held its 2010 Midwest Winter Sale at the Saint Louis Marriot Hotel-Airport Feb 12.

Scotsman's auction brought total prices realized of $859,134.35, with 708 of the total lots, or 74 percent, reported sold.

The prices realized include the 15 percent buyer's fee added to the final hammer bid.

Among the standout lots sold was a 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition gold dollar, listed as the "highest graded prooflike example" and graded Mint State 66 prooflike by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. It sold for $21,275.

Another standout was a 1907 Saint-Gaudens, High Relief, Wire Rim, Roman Numerals gold $20 double eagle, graded MS-63 by Professional Coin Grading Service, that sold for $24,150.
